One of the great things about being part of the Brum Bloggers collective is we get lovely invites to try out new places before everybody else. The latest of these places was 1580. So on a wet weekday evening sitting on the border of Wylde Green and Erdington we were whisked away to sample the spices that were brought to our shores.
The first thing that struck me was that the decor was not your typical affair. We had reclaimed wooden tables and decorations of the seven seas and Sir Francis Drake to reflect the journey of the spices.
My dining companions for the evening were the always lovely Dave from Brum Hour, Emmalene who is our Brummie Home and Abroad, Sadie from Citylicious, CaramelLatteKiss and many more.
The meal started with masala cone poppadoms and some exciting chutneys to sample, followed swiftly by the starters. This wasn’t your typical platter of samosas and pakoras. With Murgh Tikka (Chicken Tikka), marinated Lamb chops, Kochi Kekraa (Kochi Soft Shell Crab) and Zaffrani Bada Jingha Tikka (Tandoori Saffron Jumbo Tiger Prawn Tikka) this was the best start to a meal I’ve had in a long time. The chops were so tender, the prawns superb and the shell crab was so good I was looking for more.
As we moved onto means we sampled 3 dishes: a Bater Curry on the bone, a Murgh Tikka Masala and finally a Pot Pepper Lamb with plenty of pilau rice and plain naan bread to mop up the sauce. Whilst these we all very nice (the lamb was a little too hot for my very fragile and rubbish palette) I was still thinking about the starters and would’ve happily gone back for more of those.
The meal was finished off with a traditional Gulab Jamun and ice cream, and even with my very sweet tooth this was a little too sickly sweet for me, although MiniMonkey would have loved them.
The service was thoughtful, nothing was too much trouble and I will certainly go back with friends and family to make a change from from the usual expectations of a curry house. I would also recommend if you’re going over a weekend you would book in advance as I can see weekends been very busy.
I was very lucky to be fed and watered for free in return for my honest review.
